What is the IMMC
OVERVIEW
What is IMMC
The International Mathematical Modeling Challenge is an international competition where students use
mathematical modeling to analyze and solve complex, real-world
problems.
Instead of short contest questions, students tackle open-ended problems
similar to what economists, engineers, scientists, and policymakers
face in real life. Two teams from India will be selected to
represent the country at the global IMMC.
IMMC INDIA
Who can participate
- High school students (typically ages 15–19)
- Teams of up to 4 students, or individuals
- Students represent their school and country
- Both individuals and teams can be selected to represent India
The Challenge
SUBMISSION
What is Submitted?
A formal mathematical modeling paper that:
- Restates and clarifies the problem
- Defines assumptions and variables
- Develops one or more mathematical models
- Presents results and sensitivity analysis
- Explains conclusions and limitations
IMMC INDIA
What do students actually do?
-
Receive a real‑world problem (climate, transportation, sports
scheduling, economics, public policy, etc.)
- Work continuously for 5 days with their team
- Make assumptions and define variables
- Build and refine mathematical models
- Analyze data and test scenarios
- Write a research‑style paper explaining their work
There is no single correct answer — teams are judged on how they think,
model, justify, and communicate.
Awards and Past Problems

RESOURCES
View Past Problems and Solutions
Real‑world modeling problems
Tackle open‑ended scenarios drawn from climate, economics, transport,
health and more — just like professional analysts and researchers.
Guided structure
Follow a clear structure for assumptions, model building, analysis and
conclusions so your paper reads like a mini‑research project.
Global recognition
Compete for Outstanding, Finalist and Meritorious awards, and for the
chance to represent India on an international IMMC stage.
What is the eligibility criteria?
+
Pre‑university students who have not yet enrolled in a university
program are eligible to participate.
How do I register?
+
Use the navigation bar at the top of the page and open the registration
form to submit your details.
How many stages does this challenge have?
+
The IMMC India challenge has a single stage. If you are selected, you
will go on to represent India as part of the official IMMC team.
What is the format of the competition?
+
The competition is conducted entirely online. The problem is sent to you
by email, and your team submits its written solution paper by email as
well.
